Agariste of Sicyon, 6th century BC, was the daughter of the tyrant of Sicyon, Cleisthenes. Her father wanted to marry her to the "best of the Hellenes". He organized a competition, whose prize was the hand of his own daughter in marriage. While holding the event for his daughter, the former ruler Hippoclides was one of the last two remaining competitors, also, the one that the tyrant preferred. The other was Megacles. Unfortunately Hippoclides became intoxicated during the dinner party and acted like a fool. He stood on his head and kicked his legs in the air, keeping time with the flute music.
The Tyrant of Sicyon announced "Son of Tisander, you have danced your wife away."
"What does Hippoclides care?" was the reply of the tipsy youth.
And for centuries afterwards "What does Hippoclides care?" was a common
saying in Greece, to indicate reckless folly and lightness of mind.
